What is a CVIP Inspection?

A Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) inspection is a mandatory safety inspection required for many commercial trucks and trailers operating on Alberta roads.

During the inspection, our licensed technicians examine the major safety systems on your unit, including brakes, suspension, steering, tires, lighting, electrical systems, couplings, and structural components. If the vehicle meets Alberta’s inspection standards, a CVIP decal is issued along with a Certificate of Inspection.

If repairs are required, we’ll explain what needs attention and can help you develop a plan to get your equipment back into compliance.

Keeping your CVIP current helps ensure your equipment remains safe, compliant, and ready for the road.

CVIP Inspection FAQs

How often is a CVIP inspection required in Alberta?

Alberta transportation requires annual inspections of commercial trucks, truck-tractors, light trucks, trailers, and semi-trailers with a combined weight of 11,794 kilograms when operating intra-provincially and 4,500 kg when operating extra-provincially. Registered buses that carry more than 10 passengers (including the driver) must be inspected semi-annually.

How does it work?

Our licensed technicians will inspect your unit using criteria set by the Alberta Transportation, to make sure everything is working as it should. This includes, but not limited to, power train, suspension, brakes, steering, lighting and electrical system, tires and wheels, body, couplers, and hitches. Once the inspection has been completed, we provide you with an estimate of repairs if required, make the repairs if necessary, complete the paper work, and add the decal to your unit that shows the inspection date.

How long does a CVIP inspection take?

Most inspections take between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on the type of vehicle, axle configuration, and whether repairs are required. Booking an appointment helps us minimize downtime and get you back on the road sooner.

What happens if my unit fails inspection?

If your vehicle doesn’t pass, we’ll provide a clear list of any deficiencies that need to be corrected before a CVIP decal can be issued. In many cases, our shop can complete the required repairs on-site.

Can repairs be done the same day?

In many cases, yes. Our goal is to minimize your downtime and get you back on the road quickly.

Do you inspect trailers only, or trucks as well?

Both. We perform CVIP inspections on commercial trucks, truck-tractors, semi-trailers, dump trailers, flat decks, lowbeds, logging trailers, and more.

Is wheel removal required for a CVIP brake inspection?

Yes. Alberta’s inspection requirements call for wheel removal on certain brake configurations so the braking components can be properly inspected. It’s an important part of a thorough inspection and is included in our pricing.

Do you send reminders when my CVIP is due?

Yes. We keep track of your inspection date and send reminders when it’s time to renew, helping you stay compliant and avoid last-minute scheduling.
