Celebrating 50 Years of Keeping You on the Road

2025 marks 50 years in business for Hayworth Equipment Sales, and we couldn’t have reached this milestone without the incredible support of our customers, employees, and industry partners. Since opening our doors in 1975, we’ve grown from a small family-run operation into a trusted name in truck and trailer sales, service, rentals, and parts across Alberta. Through every challenge and success, one thing has remained the same—our commitment to providing honest, reliable service and practical solutions that keep you moving.

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader

The story of Hayworth Equipment Sales is one of vision, resilience, and hard work. Founder Elmer Schmidek was a trucker by trade, operating Schmidek’s Trucking from 1955 to 1974 before setting his sights on a new venture. In 1975, alongside his wife Doreen, he opened Hayworth Equipment Sales in Edmonton, transforming an old gas station into the city’s first truck and trailer consignment dealership. From the very beginning, our business was built on a foundation of honesty, integrity, and customer service—principles that continue to define us today.

As demand grew, so did our company. In 1986, we relocated to Acheson Industrial Area, a move that allowed us to expand and introduce a full-service department. Recognizing the evolving needs of Alberta’s transportation, construction, and oilfield industries, we adapted by broadening our product offerings and deepening our commitment to workplace safety.

The late 1990s brought continued growth with the addition of a parts department and increased service capabilities. However, the year 2000 marked both a celebration and a loss—our 25th anniversary coincided with the passing of our founder, Elmer Schmidek. Determined to carry on his legacy, his children stepped in to lead the business forward. Gary Schmidek transitioned into sales, Cathy Dool took on marketing, and Arlene Schmidek became administrative manager. Their leadership guided us into a new era, ensuring that Elmer’s values and customer-first philosophy remained at the heart of our operations.

By 2004, we moved just a mile down the road to our current location in Zone 2 of Acheson Industrial Area, where we have continued to grow alongside the surrounding business community. Through changing markets and industry advancements, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to providing practical solutions, reliable service, and top-tier equipment.

1975
Opening Our Doors
Opening Our Doors

When we first opened our doors on April 1, 1975, as Hayworth Trucks Limited, we operated out of a converted gas station. It wasn’t anything fancy, but we weren’t trying to wow our customers with a big, shiny building. We existed to fill a gap in the market as the first heavy truck and trailer consignment shop in Edmonton.

1980
Building for the Future

Construction of Hayworth Equipment Sales’ Winterburn location in the late 1970s. The company moved into the new building in February 1980, but the oil industry’s first major downturn in the early 1980s forced a difficult decision. To adapt to the changing market, Hayworth sold the building and returned to its original location.

Expanding to Serve More Customers

In 1998, Hayworth Equipment Sales expanded its facility to include additional office space, more service bays, and a dedicated parts department. This milestone allowed the company to better serve its growing customer base and marked the launch of its retail parts offerings—a pivotal step in evolving into the full-service provider Hayworth is known as today.

Their leadership guided us into a new era, ensuring that Elmer’s values and customer-first philosophy remained at the heart of our operations.

A Community Tradition Begins
A Community Tradition Begins

In 2000, we launched Load a Loadline, a Christmas donation drive with one goal—to help ensure no one in our community went hungry during the holiday season. Inspired by a radio station charity drive, we set out to fill an end-dump trailer with non-perishable food and toy donations for the Parkland Food Bank and Santa’s Anonymous. The community response was overwhelming. Year after year, residents and businesses came together to help fill the trailer, with generous donations pouring in at local grocery stores and drop-off locations. What started as a Hayworth-led initiative quickly became a beloved holiday tradition, making a lasting impact in the region. Eventually, the Acheson Business Association took over the event, ensuring its legacy continued under a new name—carrying forward the same spirit of generosity and community support that first inspired Load a Loadline.

2004
A Bigger, Better Home
A Bigger, Better Home

In 2004, we moved just a mile down the road to our current location in Zone 2 of Acheson Industrial Area. Situated on a high-traffic route, an estimated 2,500 trucks passed Hayworth’s new location every day. The increase in exposure and traffic led to further growth for the company, which expanded to six acres with a 22,400-square-foot facility, a retail parts department, 10 service bays with a frame straightener machine and fabrication shop, and over 25 employees.

2015
Saying Goodbye to an Icon
Saying Goodbye to an Icon

After nearly 30 years of lighting the way, our iconic neon sign—one of the last in the Edmonton area—was retired in 2015. When Elmer Schmidek first moved Hayworth into the Acheson area in 1986, he fell in love with the animated dozer on the sign. Originally belonging to the building’s previous tenants, Elmer decided to modify it rather than replace it, keeping the sign in business. It even moved with us to our current location in 2004. After decades of service, we said goodbye to this piece of Hayworth history as we transitioned to a new era.

Launching hayworthparts.com

In 2020, we took a major step forward by launching hayworthparts.com, our dedicated eCommerce store for truck and trailer parts. This move brought our parts department online for the first time, making it easier than ever for customers across Alberta—and beyond—to access the parts they need, anytime, from anywhere.

2021
Recognized for Safety
Recognized for Safety

In 2021, Hayworth was selected as a finalist for the 11th annual Canada’s Safest Employers Awards, the leading independent awards program for the occupational health and safety profession in Canada. Presented by Canadian Occupational Safety magazine, the awards recognized outstanding companies, organizations, OHS professionals, and industry service providers from across the country who went above and beyond in their commitment to workplace health and safety. Our small but mighty team was extremely honored to be recognized for our efforts in elevating health and safety in the workplace. Most importantly, we took pride in knowing that our customers and team members went home safely every night to their families.
